The
Times… They are a Changin’…
Safety and Security are major concerns for all colleges and universities. Providing
a “safe place” away from home and peace of mind for students and
parents are a constant challenge for school administrators. In-room safes for
resident students make a difference.
Student
Personal Property
USA Today reports that college students residing in dorms are bringing with
them over $3,000 of personal property including laptops, iPods, digital cameras,
portable DVD players, cell phones, software disks, portable play stations,
ear phones, jewelry, cash. In-room safes will protect these valuables, as well
as credit cards, vital medications, wallets, and intellectual property. For
every 1,000 residential students, in-room safes provide $45 million of protection
during the 15-year minimum useful life of the safes.
Residential
On-Campus Burglaries At An All-Time High
The latest statistics published by the US Department of Education show that
over 13,000 student residential burglaries occurred in 2004, up 22% over the
previous years. These cases were reported by the colleges and universities
as required under the Jeanne Cleary Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and
Campus Crime Statistics Act.
Revenue
Generating Plan
As an alternate to providing in-room safes to resident students as a courtesy,
you may wish to consider charging resident students a nominal fee to cover
the cost of safes and produce revenue for other student activities.
Third
Party Lease/Purchase Financing Arranged
No Cash Outlay Ever Required.
The first payment is not due for 12 months after installation. The university
is not required to outlay funds at any time. This is done by adopting the
SafePlace Lease Financing Program. The first payment is not due until 12 months
after the installation of the safes and after student payments for two semesters
have been received.
How
the SafePlace Program is Implemented
- Your facility manager visits each student room accompanied
by a SafePlace technician.
- Together they determine safe placement for each room
(closet, armoire, shelf, night stand or stacked if more
than one per room)
- Experienced technicians (who are insured and bonded)
install and test the safes.
- Your security personnel receive training to operate
the safes and the BiMax override unit.
